Personal
Statement:
Over the past couple of decades it has become increasingly clear to me that the
most important ingredient in a successful therapy experience is the therapy relationship
itself. The clients who gain the most from their therapy are those who feel understood,
respected and cared about, and so, feel free to take risks and to genuinely be themselves
in the therapy.
Individuals who begin therapy
generally do so because they feel depressed, angry, frightened lonely or powerless - in
short, they feel that they are not in control of their lives. This is particularly true
for those going through divorce - a loss that usually turns their lives upside down. While
people feel a wide range of emotions as they move through the divorce process, underneath
it all is the pain of loss. For most, this is terrifying. However, sharing their struggle
with a therapist who is genuinely interested in them, and who understands not only what
they are feeling, but also what lies ahead, is healing.
A basic tenet of my approach is that our
fears inhibit the natural tendency within us all to grow and move toward healthier ways of
functioning. Thus individuals who are helped to feel safe enough in their therapy to face
their fears can begin to "digest" their unfinished business and begin to take
back control of their lives.
